Taking care of yourself
Grief after a sudden death can come in waves. Let others help. You don’t have to deal with the home yourself; that’s what we’re here for.
After a suicide
Support for suicide loss survivors
Losing someone to suicide brings its own kind of grief, often mixed with shock, guilt and questions that don’t have answers. You’re not alone. 988 is open to anyone affected by suicide, including family and friends after a loss.
Many communities have survivor support groups run by hospitals, churches or mental health organizations. If you’d like, ask us and we’ll share options near you.
After a crime
Support for families of crime victims
Victim/witness programs at police departments and district attorney’s offices can connect you with counseling, explain the court process and help with compensation applications. You can ask for them by name.
If the loss was violent, it’s common to feel unsafe at home afterward. Talk to the victim advocate about that, too. Practical steps like changing locks or staying elsewhere for a while are often covered by victim compensation or insurance.
Children
Helping kids through it
Children grieve differently from adults and may ask the same questions again and again. Simple, honest answers help. School counselors and pediatricians can point you to support for kids.
Keep children out of the affected room until it’s been cleaned and restored. When we’re finished, the room should look like a normal room again, which can make it easier for the whole family.
