Good to know

No crime involved? You still call a crime scene cleanup team

The words sound alarming, but crime scene cleanup is simply what our industry calls hazardous cleaning after a death, an accident or an injury. Most of the time there’s no crime. Police are often the first to arrive, even for a natural death, and that’s a big part of why the term caught on.

Know this: if blood or bodily fluids were left anywhere at your home or business, we can help. We clean it, disinfect it and deodorize it with state-of-the-art odor removal, so the space is safe and livable again.

We handle it, crime or not

What we do

How death cleanup works in Racine

After a death, fluids can move through carpet and pad into subfloor, and through a mattress into the box spring and frame. Odor gets into drywall, trim and HVAC. Air fresheners and an ozone machine won’t fix that.

We find the full extent with precision equipment, show you exactly what has to come out, and save everything that can be saved. Photos, papers, jewelry and keepsakes are set aside and cleaned whenever possible, and we ask before anything is discarded.

What to expect

What happens after a death at home

After a death at home, 911 and the medical examiner or coroner come first. They handle the person who died and decide when the home can be released. Once it is, call us. Many families also hear about us from their funeral home. We’ll explain on the phone what happens next and send a tech to evaluate the room.

Most death cleanups take one to three days, depending on how long the person was not found and how far fluids and odor traveled. A death discovered quickly may be a single-day job. An unattended death found after several days usually means removing flooring and drywall, which takes longer and leads into a rebuild. We give you a realistic timeline in the scope.

Can it be saved?

Keepsakes, furniture and the room itself

Families worry most about belongings. Photos, papers, jewelry, hard furniture and many keepsakes can be cleaned and returned. We set them aside before any removal starts and ask before anything is discarded. Soft items that absorbed fluids, like mattresses, upholstered chairs and bedding, usually can’t be saved, and we’ll explain why.

The room itself can almost always be restored. Even when we have to remove carpet, subfloor or a section of wall, we clean and disinfect the framing underneath, seal it if needed and rebuild. When we’re done, the room should look and smell like a normal room again.

Odor

Why the smell comes back after DIY cleaning

Decomposition odor is caused by the source, not the air. Sprays, candles and ozone machines can cover it for a while, but if fluids are still in the subfloor or wall cavity, the smell returns, usually on the first warm day. That’s the most common reason families call us after trying to clean a room themselves.

We treat odor by removing the source and then deodorizing what remains. That means following contamination down into the floor and into the walls, cleaning the structure, sealing it and only then putting new materials on top. It’s slower than spraying, but it’s the only approach that lasts.

How a job like this goes

A death found after several days

What we walk into

A family member was found about a week after passing in a bedroom. Fluids had gone through the carpet into the subfloor, and odor had spread through the house.

What we did

  1. Arrival. Tech on site within 20 minutes; room sealed off to stop odor spreading.
  2. Scope. Carpet, pad, a section of subfloor, mattress and bed frame; family chose keepsakes to save.
  3. Cleanup. Removal, decontamination and odor treatment; HVAC returns cleaned.
  4. Rebuild. Subfloor patched and new flooring installed.

The result. The family could walk through the home again without the smell, and the insurer had the full scope and photos.

A typical example of how these jobs go, written to show our process. It isn’t a specific client; names and addresses are never shared.

Death cleanup tips from our techs

What we tell families on the phone before we arrive.

01

Know what the release means

When the medical examiner releases the home, you’re allowed back in. It doesn’t mean the room is safe. Let us check it first.

02

Turn off the HVAC fan

The furnace or AC fan can spread odor through the whole house. Switch it off and close the room’s door.

03

Save the things that matter

Tell us about jewelry, papers or photos in the room. We set them aside and clean them when we can.

04

Call your insurer early

Homeowners and renters policies often cover this. Report it, then let us handle the adjuster.

Proper biohazard remediation isn’t about wiping down what you can see. It’s about understanding where contamination may have spread and following the right procedures to address it.
